The Best Thing I Bought This Decade Is Fjällräven’s Kanken Laptop Backpack

My Fjällräven backpack has a stench to it. (I purchased it in yellow because of my nearsightedness.) However, it should be. I’ve put this bag through a lot in the six years I’ve had it.

I take it on the subway every day in New York City, but I’ve also taken it trekking in Vermont’s highlands, island-hopping in Greece, on the beaches of Tulum, and through Seoul and Tokyo’s streets. It’s seen me through rainstorms and heatwaves, and there are no tears or loose threads, and the zippers have never snagged or come undone.

When the Kanken initially debuted in the United States in 2012, I knew I had to have one. The red fox decal, the bag handles, and the boxy design all appealed to me. It didn’t matter to me that it was designed in 1978 as a schoolbag for youngsters. (For me, the fact that it has a history contributed to its allure).

I didn’t care if they were adults, students, or small children all around the city. This was one trend I wasn’t afraid to follow. Even if it seemed a little immature, I knew it would become a classic in no time.

I eventually got one after months of searching. It seemed a bit pricey for a backpack, but considering what I use it for and how long it’s lasted, it was well worth the money.

I chose the laptop version since, at the time, I was carrying my MacBook to work every day at a small film production firm and needed to rest my shoulder.

The laptop area is located in a separate, zipped pouch at the back of the bag, rather than inside the bag. This makes slipping my PC in and out without having to open the main compartment quite convenient.

It’s also padded, so you won’t have to lug about a huge laptop sleeve. When you’re not carrying a laptop, the extra compartment is ideal for storing notebooks, external hard drives, screenplays, and other materials.

Although the bag is small, its boxy design helps to organize your belongings and allows you to fit more within. (For example, when traveling, I’ve been able to fit a huge DSLR camera, additional batteries, my laptop charger, wallet, and makeup case in the main compartment.)

The main compartment’s zippers extend all the way to the bottom of the bag, allowing you to open it up (and cram it full of stuff) like a suitcase.

The bottom of the bag does not sag like regular backpacks, which helps me maintain better posture. And the straps are so well-padded that my shoulders have never ached like they do with other backpacks, even after a whole day of walking around with my laptop and that heavy camera.

The Kanken fits just what I need — and lets me carry it comfortably — whether I’m going to the office or the airport.

It also has another surprising use, a diaper bag that appears far cooler than a true diaper bag, thanks to all of its different compartments (it also has two external side pockets). I included a Kanken on my baby registry earlier this year, but this time I requested it in navy blue.
