Fire Up Your Own Personal Radio Station with FM Transmitters

It is a modern requirement to connect your smartphone or mp3 player to your stereo. We all spend a lot of time in our cars and the proper tunes or podcasts can make the whole time a lot more fun behind the wheel. You could even find yourself going home a bit longer and a bit more difficult, from time to time.

It’s easy to make the connection between your stereo and audio device if your stereo is built-in with a Bluetooth or headphone jack. But you will need an FM transmitter if your car stereo does not have either.

    What is an FM Transmitter?

Single wireless devices that turn your smartphone, mp3 player, or another audio device into your own personal radio station are FM transmitters. You transmit the audio from your connected device over a very limited radius of your choice. You can adjust the radio frequency of your car stereo with the FM transmitter once set up.

    How Do FM Transmitters Work?

You can start by connecting your audio device to the broadcaster by Bluetooth or by connecting a 3.5mm cable to the headphone port. The FM transmitter is connected to your car’s 12V accessory socket (the old cigarette lighter socket). On the transmitter, you select an FM radio frequency that no local radio stations currently use.

Then you simply tune into the frequency on your stereo and voila, so you can now directly stream music and other audio from your smartphone or mp3 player over your stereo system.

What Devices Are Compatible with FM Transmitters?

The FM transmitter you choose will decide to connect to which audio devices. You may want to choose a Bluetooth-enabled FM transmitter for you to play audio from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone on your car stereo. This guarantees clean wireless configuration.

On the other hand, you will need an FM transmitter with a 4.5mm aux port if you want to play sound from your MP3 player on your car stereo and that mp3 player is without Bluetooth input.

Features to Look for in an FM Transmitter

Some FM transmitters also feature an integrated microphone. This means that if it is connected to your smartphone as well as to play music, podcasts, and audiobooks, you can use it as a speakerphone.

Also, a handy feature is an integrated LED screen that shows Caller ID, track details, and other information. You can see with ease who calls before you reply, or what song you play.

You’ll also want to find a USB charging port with an FM transmitter. This enables you to load your smartphone or another device while simultaneously streaming audio. Some transmitters have multiple USB ports so that several devices can be loaded at the same time.

    Review:

Setup is fast and easy. The process: connected to the phone through Bluetooth, set FM channel to 87.9 (my favorite transmission radio station), changed car stereo to 87.9 F MB. The quality of the sound is top of the list for short radius FM. My audio apps worked perfectly with the next and previous buttons. The adjustable volume nob makes it easy for you to adjust the volume and allows you to adjust the volume exactly where you want on your phone, transmitter, and stereo. Even when the cup holders are extended forcing strange angles, the long-adjustable neck is perfectly accessible.

Rapid charging works great with my Samsung Galaxy S6 phone and double-charge simultaneously. Surprisingly well the microphone on the transmitter works. Those who call can hear me all right and I can hear them well. The Audio Jack functions according to expectations and provides a great connection for unconnected devices. My 32-GB sd card is very good for the micro sd slot. Overall, I am impressed and recommend the transmitter for both quality and price.
